Gastric Bypass Recipes
66A gastric bypass surgery is very radical procedure that essentially bypasses your stomach and instead creates a very small stomach which then leads to the small intestine. Because the resultant 'pouch' is so much smaller it causes you to eat much less than you are normally accustomed to.
Not only do you eat less but it also effects how - and to what extent - nutrients are absorbed. Because of that it's very important that you pay attention to how you eat after a gastric bypass surgery.
Planning Gastric Bypass Surgery Recipes
The 3 main nutrients that you'll need to be concerned about are protein, carbohydrates and fats. You need all three and yes, even though everybody seems to be on a low carbohydrate kick - you still need them.
That's why each meal that you consume or recipe that you come up with needs to be planned more carefully than what you did before the surgery.
For example, after gastric bypass surgery protein is very important as it helps maintain the muscle tissue you do have and also helps you heal.
In addition, the recipes you follow should be careful to avoid sugar. First and foremost, there are virtually no nutrients in sugary foods. Secondly, it can lead to a phenomenon called 'dumping'. I think you can understand what the term means just by reading it but you're talking diarrhea, cramps and just a general all around "I wish I wouldn't have done that" feeling.
As I said above, you and I need fats. They don't make you fat. That's a big misconception. But, after your surgery it's important for you to cook recipes that have limited fats as they can actually slow the transit time of foods through your stomach and intestine leading to 'back up' and may lead to heartburn.
Vitamins and Nutrients. Because the surgery limits the amount of foods you eat it's very important that you get a quality multivitamin supplement to ensure that you are getting adequate amounts of all the necessary nutrients. It's going to be very hard to do with you new stomach size.
Now, just in case you are thoroughly confused - here are some sample recipes you can use after your gastric bypass:
The 5 Minute Breakfast
1/2 Slice of Whole Wheat Toast with 1/2 tsp butter
1 Scrambled egg (no milk added. Simply whip the egg)
1/4 to 1/3 of a medium banana
Salmon Delight
2 ounces of baked salmon (You may want to give a cedar plank a try - it really adds to the flavor)
1/4 cup each of steamed broccoli and carrots
Also, it's very helpful to come up with some snack ideas. I know a lot of gastric bypass patients love the idea of protein smoothies. You get the required protein plus you can make it in whatever flavor suits you.
Here's one idea for a quick, delicious protein smoothie
A small bit of banana
A couple of strawberries
A bit of Whey standard protein
A couple of ice cubes
Obviously, you have to be a little creative and pay very close attention to the signals your body is sending you. But with careful preparation and a little will to make it happen you can be very content with many of the recipes you can come up with after a gastric bypass.
