Spring Valley Vitamins

Spring Valley vitamins appears to be more of a mom and pop operation out of Springfield, Missouri. It has been owned by the same person since 1981. And while some may insist that this is not who you should be looking to purchase vitamin supplements from, I don't really agree.

That's because many smaller businesses tend to focus more on the customer service end of things. And that's just what I found. Upon visiting the website I was given a toll-free number for customer service. On a Sunday afternoon, I certainly didn't expect an answer...but...I was surprised when a friendly voice on the other end picked up. I requested a catalog but she informed me that they don't have catalogs.

The rest of my experience and review of Spring Valley Vitamins follows the same kind of pattern...

A strong impression in certain areas...and...a little bit of a letdown in others

Granted, my reviews are a little more stringent than most people. But that is my job. To steer you clear of the duds and guide you towards the supplements that are right for you.

Let's try to give you a feel for where Spring Valley vitamins fits in.

Like I said above, Spring Valley Vitamins excelled when it came to customer service. Many vitamin companies that I call don't even have an operating phone number, let alone a real, live person on the other end picking up and actually talking to you. In fact, I've called other companies with big, flashy, ultra-expensive corporate websites only to find that they've been defunct for some time.

That is not the case with Spring Valley vitamins. It appears that because they are a little smaller they have more of a focus on customer service...which...is a welcomed breath of fresh air in a industry full of marketing smog.

Like I said though, they didn't have a catalog. Which is probably something they should try to work on. Granted, I could see everything on the website. But what if somebody got their phone number who didn't have a computer and wanted to purchase something?

But what about the vitamins?

Spring Valley vitamins also appears to be selling some good products. What do I mean by that? Lets take a look at one of their flagship multivitamins, Life Essentials. For a multivitamin in that price range it is refreshing to see ample amounts of the low B's (vitamin B1, 2, 3 and 6). At least 25mg of each. This is often an area that many multi's skimp in. Not Spring Valley.

But then you look at the vitamin E and C content and it's a little bit of a letdown. Vitamin E is only 250IU's a day and it's not a mixed tocopherol formulation (at least I don't think it is...they never actually said what kind of vitamin E it is). Which leads me to one of my biggest complaints about Spring Valley vitamins:

They appear to put vitamins into their lineup as more of an afterthought, rather than their focus

For example, they aren't really called Spring Valley vitamins, they are Spring Valley Herbs and Natural Foods. My feelings were only supported when I was never able to find what exactly was in their vitamin formulations. For example, many lower end multivitamins don't contain a mixed tocopherol vitamin E. And that is O.K. because you can purchase a separate mixed tocopherol vitamin E and still be in the recommended dosing range of 400-800 IU's/day for vitamin E.

So I decided to check out their selection of mixed tocopherol vitamin E's. It was good. But again, the descriptions weren't. They listed the brands and strengths but then again, failed to mention the percentages and type of tocopherols contained in the product.

Some manufacturers use this little trick to fool customers into thinking they are getting more than they really are. For example, if it is a mixed tocopherol product they should list all the components and the percentages of each. Spring Valley vitamins doesn't have these 2 essential ingredients.

What this allows companies to do is use 99% alpha-tocopherol (less expensive) and 1% the other tocopherols (much more expensive) and pawn it off as a 25% mix of all tocopherols.

I'm not saying that's what Spring Valley is doing, I'm just saying that if you are going to sell a mixed tocopherol product you must be able to list the individual components or it starts bordering 'deceptive'.

And like I said above, Spring Valley Vitamins appears to be a good and reputable company with it's focus on customer service. However, the website design is a bit cumbersome and the lack of a catalog for offline customers is a serious detriment.

Even more important are the products, which appear to be pretty decent at first glance. But the lack of disclosure about ingredients and sources is a little bit concerning for me personally.

Spring Valley Vitamins does include other ingredients that I have heard good things about but am not in the position to comment on in a critical way as I really don't know enough about them. Some examples include chlorella, algae and bee pollen.

The skinny on Spring Valley Vitamins

In short, Spring Valley Vitamins appears to be a reputable company with a focus on customer service. But just when things seem great they have a bit of a letdown in my opinion. Their product descriptions are sparse which, when your selling online, is a bit of a 'red flag' in my opinion. They haven't had any bad complaints or reviews that I could find and their prices are reasonable.

For example, their Life Essentials multi is just under $12 with $4 shipping and handling. But, that will only last you 20 days at the recommended 3 tablets per day. So, you'll be more up in the $20 range for a month supply.

This is a fair price, especially considering the amount of vitamins that are in the product. But, like I said above, their descriptions of the product and where they get their ingredients and the percentages of each is just too sparse for it to warrant a wholehearted recommendation from me.

Spring Valley vitamins had a lot of good points that I like to see in companies, but their deficiencies were in areas that are just too important to ignore. Especially when it comes to your health and your money.

I found myself at times wanting so much to recommend Spring Valley Vitamins but in the end I just couldn't look past some of their shortcomings. But...I'll keep my eye on them and if things change a little...so would my review.

You are right Spring Valley Herbs and Natural Foods is a locally owed Health Food Store in Springfield Missouri. We have been in business since 1968 and work very closely with many local doctors and practitioners in our town and surrounding ares. The most commonly asked questions is: Is this the same SpringValley sold at Walmart? The answer to that question is a huge astounding NO, no we are not. Walmart carries their house brand line of vitamins called: Spring Valley Vitamin Co. This line is manufactured by 20 different companies. Our private label is called (naturally) SpringValley Herbs and Natural Foods and is manufactured just for our store by a company called Reliance. We hand select every line of vitamins we bring into our store, assuring you that each company has their products 3rd party tested and comply with GMP standards (good manufacturing policy); Customer Service is our #1 Goal!Promise!

We have been online since 2001 and are constantly updating our website! The site is still under construction, so any missing information please don't hesitate to contact us with your questions we will be happy to help.

I hope this helps to further clear up the confusion out there surrounding the name Spring Valley ...

Sincerely, Mindy

Most consumers really don't see any difference because they've

never taken any good vitamins . Are these going to kill you or make you sick ? probably not , but they aren't going to give you any benefits that your taking a supplement for.

Spring Valley is just a distributor who buys the cheapest product it can find and sells to major chains like Walmart.

Not a place I'd buy my vitamins.

Okay I have the post that ALL of you have been waiting for.... Our company has been getting calls from upset customers who are looking for Spring Valley Vitamins which are sold at Wallmart. They have incorrectly been given our 800 number for these vitamins but we are a technology company and DO NOT offer any type of vitamins.

I was so tired of getting these calls from upset customers that I took the time to do the research and find out where this company is and why no one can contact them directly.

First I will tell you it's not Spring Valley Herbs...

The parent company is a company called US Nutrition Inc. which owns Natures Bounty and Spring Valley which is sold at Walmart stores.

First of all - this thread is NOT about the "Spring Valley Vitamin Brand" you buy at Walmart.

I guess some people who post here can't read.

The cheap Walmart "Spring Valley Vitamin Brand" vitamins are made by 20 or more different companies. You have to read the label and contact the specific manufacturer's phone number printed on the bottle.

As for "Spring Valley Herbs and Natural Foods" ... they don't make any vitamins. They're just another run of the mill distributor. No better or worse than any other health food joint. Just like Walmart, they buy their vitamins from some other manufacturer and just slap their label on the bottles.

Again, if you have questions about a vitamin product, check the label and contact the manufacturer listed on it. If there's no address, email, webpage, or phone number to contact the company - stop using the vitamins and toss them. Reputable companies have contact information printed on the label. Fly-by-Night vitamin companies usually just slap a fancy name on the label without contact info.

The one thing to remember - the vitamin industry is a murky and unregulated one. They're not tested and you have really no idea whether what you bought was B6 or crushed up SweetTarts pounded into pill form. Most vitamin companies are resellers only. Someone else makes the pills and dozens of other companies just slap their labels on them.

My wife and I have used Spring Valley vitaminss and suppliments many years and have only one complaint. This is not with the product but with the jar in which they are packaged.

The flat-sharp neck makes it hard to shake the tab, or gelgap, out to take. I believe it would be easier if the beck was tapered, say at maybe 5-10 o/0.

Hope someone will read this and consider it.

This morning I was refilling my medicine container for the week. When I got to my garlic , as i poured the gel caps into my hand , I noticed that one of the caps had a letter on it. I removed the letter, I think it is made from black paper. The letter could be a small (b,p or a d). Is this something I should be concerned with? This is the info on the bottle. it is the first bottle of a twin pack ,100 softgels, 1000mg, odorless, garlic, item# 2593 B12320W 01A, 374655-03 EXP 10/13.

The company that makes Spring Valley, also makes Nature Made, according to the number on the box of vitamins I am taking. They are acutally made by Pharmavite, out of Mission Hills, California 866-763-1927

So glad I read these comments. It was a shock to realize that the Spring Valley brand sold at Walmart is in fact made by numerous different companies. I looked at my WM Spring Valley bottle of D3 and saw that it has a completely different company name and toll-free number from the WM Spring Valley "Natural Calcium" supplement! The calcium doesn't even have a "made by" or "manufactured by" -- it only says "distributed by" Perrigo, a large distributor (not maker) of generic supplements and OTC drugs. Despite the "natural" on the label, the WM SV calcium supp. includes a long list of exotic chemicals (e.g., hypromellose, mineral oil, triethyl citrate, polysorbate 80, crospovidone, etc.) that I don't want in my body.

I have been taking Spring Valley Natural Calcium combined with Vitamin D,which I too buy from Walmart.I have been in an emotional turmoil, much crying ,irritability and difficulty getting along with anyone. I started neglecting to take this pill sometimes and discovered I seemed to feel better when I didn't take it. I have quite taking it altogether and feel like a new person and my old self. I will talk to my Doctor about this as I blame it on these Vitamins. This needs to be looked into.I was about ready to see a Pychiatrist.

Spring Valley vitamins appears to be more of a mom and pop operation out of Springfield, Missouri.

is it not just plain boring walmart store brand

marritt 7 months ago

For R M Crawford. It's not the brand...it's the vitamin itself. Vitamin D affects your mood. Women's bodies use it to make progesterone..which in high amounts (like when pregnant) can make one quite unstable. It can also affect med. If you already have a chemical imbalance that alters your mood, vitamin D can either make this better or much worse.

@ liver damage...it's been a long time since you posted...but Vitamin E is one of those vitamins that can get to toxic levels in your body because it is stored in fat cells. You can't even give it to babies for this reason. Doing research on your vitamins is really important before taking super high doses.

I have bought vitimans at Wal-Mart for years and over-all got good results, untill recently. I got Spring Valley brand (Wal-Mart has changed to them)and they are worthless. But then that is par for the course---CHEAPER, Cheaper, and cheaper, also worthless--live better (not), save money (or throw it away) that's the Waldo Willie way....

Hi, I always buy the 2 pack of fish oil at walmart, never had a problem until a couple of months ago.I notified the company by email, that some of the the capsuls were sort of cloudy and not bright and clear like before. The company sent me a complaint number and that was about a month a go.

I emailed then recently and have not heard from them. the email with the complaint number said they would check in to it, so far no one has contacted me.I don't know if they are bad or good. Has any one had this problem???

After reading all of these comments and realizing that the American walmart vitamins really suck, im proud to say that walmart Canada has all of their house brand "Equate" vitamins (A-Z) made by the same company, Vita Health products which is also located here in Canada! Maybe walmart USA should quit trying to find the cheapest vitamins on the market and focus on finding one supplier/manufacturer with quality products!
